Schools will celebrate Baton relay

An afternoon of celebration encouraging school children to participate in sport will accompany the arrival of the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton to Welshpool.

With the passing through of the London Olympic Torch five years ago still fresh in the memory, the town will hold a similar event and hopes that the area as a whole will come out to support when it makes its way through on September 7.

The Town Council has announced that from noon, the Mayor will open the specially held Welshpool Games at the High School which will feature 16 local schools.

At 2.45pm the Mayor will be joined by the Chairman of Powys County Council to present medals to the winners.

This will enable participants to take their positions for when the Baton makes its way through town at 3.10pm.

The Town Council will budget £600 for medals and other expenses anticipated and it will come out of the Special Projects Budget.

Back in 2012, thousands of people lined the streets of Welshpool (pictured) when the Olympic Games torch was carried through the town.

The baton contains a message from Her Majesty the Queen to Games athletes, which will be read out at the Opening Ceremony on Australia’s Gold Coast early next year.

The baton will also stop at Llanidloes High School and Primary School, Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd in Newtown before heading via Welshpool to Theatr Clwyd in Mold.
