New Apprenticeship scheme

New employment opportunities for young people will now be available following the launch of a Powys County Council apprenticeship scheme at an event in the Wyeside Arts Centre in Builth Wells.

The council has for a number of years offered fixed-term apprenticeships and now it has launched a new career-graded apprenticeship. It is believed that that Powys is the first council in Wales to offer this.

 A career-graded apprenticeship is set over an agreed period with proportional pay. On completion of the apprenticeship, individuals take up a permanent position on full-pay. 

This contrasts with fixed-term apprenticeships which are offered for a specific time period but with no guarantee that suitable permanent employment will be offered. Trainee and graduate schemes will also be on offer.

Cllr James Evans, Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for HR, said: “We are pleased to be able to offer this range of apprenticeship schemes. Strengthening learning and skills for young people and helping to develop a vibrant economy as part of our Cabinet’s 2025 vision.”

 At the event the council also launched a short film which will be used as part of a recruitment drive to attract new professionals to the organisation as well as highlighting Powys as a great place to live and work.

Cllr Rosemarie Harris (pictured), Leader of Powys County Council said: “We know what a beautiful county we live in but it’s important to share this with potential employees who may not realise. After watching this film, though, they will be in no doubt that Powys is an amazing place to live, work and play.”
