Welshpool: the ‘accessible’ town

18/02/2018 @ 07:17

Welshpool could become one of the most accessible towns in Wales, thanks to the input of a key councillor.

Cllr Folkert Veenstra is a wheelchair user and was elected to the council at the last election, making a rapid positive impression.

In recent months, temporary ramps have been made to access St Mary’s Church (pictured) when required, and now plans are coming together to create a ‘Changing Room’ close to the Tourist Information Centrea under the town’s ‘Access for All’ plan.

“Cllr Folkert Veenstra has made a positive contribution to the council since he came on board and it has opened our eyes as to what we should be doing to make the town more accessible,” said Town Clerk, Robert Robinson.

“A changing facility, equipped with relevant hoists and equipment, would be a very positive step for the town. It would encourage those travelling with a severely disabled passenger to stop and visit the town.

“The cost is roughly £15,000, of which grant aid of £10,000 could be available from Awards for all Wales. Perhaps we could also look at showers for lorry drivers to encourage more of them to stop in the town overnight. It all contributes to the town’s economy.”
