A Welshpool resident has won the support of Powys County Councillors in his fight for extended yellow lines at a dangerous junction.
Arthur Billington has presented a petition, signed by over 200 residents of the town, to Councillor Phyl Davies, Portfolio Holder for Highways, Recycling and Assets and Welshpool County Councillor Graham Breeze.
The retired driving instructor is calling for more double yellow lines in Brook Street to prevent parkers obstructing the view of motorists leaving the Dol-y-felin estate junction.
Mr Billington, who lives on the estate, led a campaign for double yellow lines over two years ago but claims Powys County Council have put the lines too close to the junction, making it impossible to see traffic coming from the left when leaving the estate.
“You have to be in the middle of Brook Street to see if anything is coming from the left if you want to turn right towards the town centre,” he said. “Sooner or later someone will be killed. I have seen so many near-misses.”
Councillor Davies Said: “I have received a petition from residents concerned about the junction at Dolyfelin in Welshpool. I will raise this with highways officers and see what can be done to address the concerns raised.”
Councillor Breeze supported Mr Billington. “The council clearly got this wrong and we have to put things right before something tragic happens at this junction.
“I use this junction regularly myself so appreciate that you take your life into your own hands every time you use it.
“Applying to extend double yellow lines can be a long procedure but I am suggesting we take some immediate action to prevent motorists parking so close to this junction while orders are sought.”
