New toilet facility a step closer

A state-of-the-art toilet and changing facility that will take Welshpool a step ahead of most towns in Britain is closer to becoming a reality.

The Changing Places Facility, which is suitable for severely disabled people, is being earmarked for the Berriew Street toilet block.

It would involve extending the current facility to enable access and room for hoists to be installed, but it is long awaited for a town that is a popular stopping point for travellers between the Midlands and the coast.

This week, a Town Council committee agreed to take the proposal forward.

“The Committee suggested that the design be taken forward but that consideration also be given to a possible extension of the building to the side (subject to PCC approval),” it states in the meeting minutes.

It is hoped that grant aid could cover most of the £12,000 budget, and an application will be made to Awards for All Wales via Welshpool Town Services Ltd.

The toilet was vandalised twice (pictured) earlier this year.
