Transatlantic celebration on Llanfair Line

26/06/2018 @ 10:47

The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway will again be celebrating Canada Day on Sunday, led by general manager Charles Spencer who hails from the North American nation.

Stations along the line will be bedecked in Canadian flags, photographs and posters, and visitors will be invited to plot their friends and relations on wall maps of Canada.

Since taking up his role in 2015, Charles has been amazed at how many volunteers on and visitors to the line seem to know someone who lives in Canada. Charles’ family will be on hand to help visitors find locations on the map.

Any visitors to the railway able to present their valid Canadian passports at either booking office will be given a complimentary return ticket.

Other attractions will include quizzes on the subject of Canada for adults and children travelling on the train, with Canadian prizes. Also available is a brand-new and handsome folder about Canadian railways courtesy of Via Rail, Canada’s national passenger railway, hoping to tempt visitors to make the nearly 3,000 mile trip between Toronto and Vancouver.

A spotting guide will challenge children to find the Canadiana located at each station, while there will also be a display of Canadian stamps at Welshpool Raven Square station.

This will be the third Canada Day celebration held by the Llanfair Line and previous occasions have resulted in the W&LLR being named by the Canadian Automobile Association as one of the top ten places outside Canada to celebrate Canada Day!

Trains run on both days of this weekend, and Tuesday through Thursday next week, with return departures from Welshpool at 11.15am and 2.05pm.

The line’s summer daily service starts on July 14 and will run right through to September, with extra trains and freight movements featuring at the next Vintage Weekend, on July 7-8. The Tearoom at Llanfair Caereinion is open every day for light lunches and refreshments.
