Historic local building set to reopen

One of the area’s most prominent local buildings is expected to reopen its doors this week following a major renovation.

Montgomery Town Council and the Montgomery Community Buildings Preservation Trust confirmed last night through the Montgomery Wales Facebook page that refurbishment work on the Town Hall will be completed on schedule.

The refurbishment, which has included a number of improvements including better access, new gents’ and ladies’ toilets, and a complete overhaul of the ground floor, took over five months, with the builders working around some long-standing commitments.

“The Town Council would like to thank residents, visitors and local organisations and businesses for their support during this time,” said a spokesperson.

The current red brick building was thought to have been built in 1751, with the clock tower added in 1920.

The official re-opening will be on Saturday evening from 7pm for the public to enjoy a cup of tea and to see the changes for themselves. Members of the Council and the Trust will be on hand to answer questions.

Then, from 8pm to midnight, entertainment will be provided through an Open Mic Night where members of the community will be performing. The bar will be available, together with light refreshments.

Organiser Mike Mills said: “It’s an opportunity for all those budding rock stars, frustrated poets and would-be entertainers to get on the stage and enjoy their moment in the spotlight.

“We want to demonstrate the talent we have locally and showcase to everyone what a great venue the Town Hall is for any social event.”
