16/08/2019 @ 09:23

Students at the NPTC Group College Newtown are celebrating results in completing Vocational courses as well as A-Levels, apprenticeship and the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification (WBQ).

Seventy-four students across the Newtown and Neath campuses achieved triple distinction grades in the Extended National Diploma qualifications, with 30 students achieving the highest possible grade profile of triple distinction stars (D*D*D*) which is the equivalent to three A* at A level.

The College increased its overall A*-A results to an exceptional 20 percent with students achieving a remarkable 100 per cent pass rate in 26 A Level subjects, 46.3 per cent achieved A* to B grades with a further 76 per cent gaining A* to C grades.

For the students who followed the Gifted and Talented (Gate) programme it is also good news with 85% achieving A*/A grades and 100% achieved A*-B grades.

The results for 2019 top off an incredible year for the College which was named the Top Training Provider in Wales and second in the entire UK for Teaching by the School Leavers Awards.

At Newtown College there has been success in a range of qualifications including WBQ with over 40 students completing their studies.

The Health, Social and Childcare department has had exceptional success with Level 3 Extended Diplomas in 2019, with the majority of students going on to University and others securing employment.

Eight of the students studying Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (HSC) achieved the top grade of triple star distinction.  Amy Price, Lucy Collard, Carla Jones, Niamh Natasha Pugh, Lauren Tabberer, Trudi Hancock, Ruth Jenkins and Ffion Jones all achieved the top grade.

Notably HSC student Ffion Jones, achieved a Bronze Award for the BTEC Child, Health and Social Care Student of the Year 2019 to recognise her outstanding dedication and commitment to the subject.

Ffion combined studying for the BTEC along with, two part-time jobs, being a Dementia Friends Champion, raising £320 for the Alzheimer’s Society, being a Police Cadet with Dyfed Powys Police, a Cadet Leader at Newtown’s St. Johns Centre, has carried out work placements at Bethshan Nursing home in Newtown and at Newtown Hospital, completed bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh awards and somehow still found time to achieve fantastic grades to help her fulfil her dream of becoming a Police Officer.

Ffion is now training to become a Special Constable with Dyfed Powys Police.
Students on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Childcare have all either found employment or have secured a university place of their choice.

Remarkably Libby Cawley has successfully received a place as one of only 100 students with the prestigious Norland Nannies, a childcare choice for the rich and famous, including royalty such as Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Sarah Eskins Health and Social Care Lecturer said ‘We have a had a fabulous bunch of students in this past cohort in all sorts of ways: hard working, determined, enthusiastic, motivated, conscientious and great fun to teach.

It’s sad to see them go but they are now progressing to university or into jobs. We wish them all the luck in the world for their futures’.

Mark Dacey, Chief Executive Officer and Principal of NPTC Group of Colleges said: “Once again we can celebrate the fact that we are a top achieving college with some remarkable results and talented students. Their success is down to hard work and dedication. We care about their future and with the support of our incredible staff and investment in facilities we can look forward to building on this success.”
