Meet Welshpool’s Super Mario!

27/05/2011 @ 12:32

Welshpool has an adopted son who has put the town on the map after becoming one of Britain’s strongest men!

Mariusz Pilinski (known as Mario) only started competing in strongman competitions last year when he finished sixth in the UK North competition and this year he has already picked up a third in the Yorkshire Strongman Competition last month.

He now has his sights fixed on more competitions and is preparing for a busy year ahead.

Super Mario, 29, started his passion with weighlifting when he was 16 in his native Poland but has taken it more seriously since moving to his new home in Welshpool.

“I have been working out for a few years now at a private gym run by Chris Stevens in Welshpool and I have just got more and more interested in the competition side of it,” he said.

And just look at how strong he has become. Last year he pulled an 11-ton truck and this year he lifted a van in competition. His record lift is a whopping 290kg. In Yorkshire he hoisted atlas stones for the first time, weighing 144 kg each.

Mario said he would like to organise some strongman events in Welshpool to help promote the town to the country.
