Montgomery launches Flu campaign

24/09/2020 @ 10:39

Montgomery Medical Practice has launched its flu vaccination campaign and is urging residents to book as soon as possible.

With the annual flu season expected the increase pressure on the Covid-inundated NHS this winter, health bosses say it is more important than ever to get a jab with appointments now available in Montgomery.

“We have seen a huge demand for the flu vaccination this year, therefore if you fall under one of the below at risk groups, please call the surgery on 01686 668217 to book your flu vaccination appointment as soon as possible to avoid disappointment,” said a spokesperson.

Those eligible for the free vaccination are:

·      Patients aged 65 years and older

·      Pregnant patients

·      Patients with Diabetes

·      Patients with a chronic respiratory disease i.e. Asthma/COPD

·      Patients that are unpaid carers

·      Patients with chronic heart, liver or kidney disease

·      Patients with a chronic neurological disease i.e. Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, history of stroke/TIA or learning disability.

·      Patients that are immunosuppressed due to HIV/AIDS or under treatment such as cancer treatment or long term steroid therapy.

·      Patients with Asplenia or dysfunction of the spleen

·      Morbidly obese patients (BMI 40+)

Due to COVID-19, the surgery has had to review the way it delivers vaccinations to ensure they are administered safely and in a timely manner. The vaccinations will be delivered in mass clinics this year.

The health board has provided sessions on a consecutive 6-week period to allow practices to deliver vaccines safely.

During these sessions, the health board have arranged for Shropdoc to provide cover and the surgery will only be open for vaccination clinics only.

The below dates are when the surgery will be open for vaccination clinics only. From 12pm, calls will be transferred through to Shropdoc.

·      Tuesday 6th October 2020

·      Wednesday 14th October 2020

·      Tuesday 20th October 2020

·      Wednesday 28th October 2020

There will be disabled parking available just outside the surgery during flu clinics. Patients with no mobility issues are asked to find parking elsewhere. This will hopefully reduce congestion on Well Street to allow those less able bodied easy access to the clinics. These patients will have the option to be vaccinated whilst sat in their car.

All patients will be given the choice of receiving the vaccine outside or inside.

It will be clearly marked out on the day and there will be staff outside the surgery to assist patients.

Key points to remember when attending for a flu vaccination:

·      Please arrive as close to your appointment time as possible

·      Your temperature will be checked before entering the building

·      Patients must wear a face covering

·      Bring as little belongings with you as possible

·      Please wear suitable clothing so your arm is easily accessible

Fluenz Vaccination Appointments

The children’s fluenz nasal spray vaccine will be delivered on separate days to the flu vaccination clinics. The surgery will be vaccinating all children aged 2 and 3 years old and patients aged 11-17 with a chronic disease i.e. asthma, diabetes etc.
Children that attend primary school will be vaccinated in school via the triage nurse.
Please contact the surgery on 01686 668217 to arrange a fluenz vaccination appointment for your child if they are eligible for the primary care fluenz programme.

Do not attend the surgery if you, or a close contact, has symptoms or have had recent contact with a suspected/confirmed case of Covid-19.
