Guilsfield to close off centre for big jubilee celebration

07/03/2022 @ 10:52

Guilsfield is planning to close off the village centre to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in style.

A weekend of activity over the extended first weekend of June is being planned with residents and councillors coming together to create activities for all ages. And more people are invited to join in with the planning.

“The enthusiasm for creating something special for our community is incredible,” explained Ian Harrison, Chairman of Guilsfield Community Council.

“We want the celebrations to start on the Friday afternoon and evening with family sports and fun, possibly a treasure hunt, and finish with a hog roast.

“Saturday will include an entertainment evening in the village centre and we are hoping for traditional street parties throughout the community on the Sunday.

“To make the village centre safe for children and pedestrians on the Saturday we hope to apply to close the road temporarily between the Oak and Kings Head car parks (pictured). I don’t think this has been done before, not in living memory anyway.

“The church is busy planning a series of musical events on the Friday, a Coronation memorabilia exhibition on the Saturday and a Jubilee Service on Sunday which will include hymns sung at the Queen’s Coronation.

“Exciting ideas are coming in from all parts of the community and welcome more. This is a celebration for everyone, so everyone has the opportunity to contribute,” he added.

Guilsfield Community Council has agreed to provide up to £1,000 to support the events.

A meeting will be held in the Kings Head on Tuesday night with an invitation for anyone to attend with ideas for the weekend.
