Downing Street avoided a potential Welsh uprising last night after climbing down over its refusal to fly the Welsh Dragon over No. 10 on Saturday for the Rugby World Cup semi-final against France.
Rugby fans from across Montgomeryshire were incensed after the Prime Minister’s office initially refused to fly the flag in support, and mywelshpool threw its weight behind the BBC’s Jason Mohammed’s campaign to have it overturned.
The debate on his phone-in was sparked by an initial refusal despite Prime Minister David Cameron backing England at last year’s football World Cup by flying the St George Cross over his official residence.
Listeners wrote asking us to support his bid and with the Welsh media poised to bombard the No 10 Press Office, Mr Cameron annoucned a u-turn:
“Wales are the last home nation competing in the Rugby World Cup and I wish them every success in the semi-final against France on Saturday.
"We would only usually fly a home nation flag for a final, but I know how important a competition this is and we all want to get behind Wales, so I’ve decided to break with tradition on this occasion and fly the flag for Wales in Downing Street on Saturday."
