A group of sixth form students from Welshpool High school will be jet setting half way across the world this month to take part in the annual ‘Welshpool to Waterford’ student exchange.

The seven students - Chloe Collins, Cerys Bennet, Megan Over, Sionned Brewin, Thomas Thompson, Jack Lewis and Bethan Evans - will spend a week in the Canadian province of Ontario.

Run in partnership with the Welshpool Rotary club, the group will live with their host families to experience a taste of Canadian life, from attending a day at their host’s school to visiting prominent local places.

“I wanted to be part of the exchange because it's a good opportunity to see other parts of the world and I am also excited about making new friends,” said Chloe.

“Going on the trip really interested me because I’ve never been to Canada and my sister Laura, who went in 2009, said it was an amazing experience,” added Cerys.

Megan said she had been to Russia but is looking forward to her trip west.

Cerys continued: “I’m really excited to see how different Canada is to Wales and I also can’t wait to meet loads of new people. I’m most excited about spending a day in their school.”

“I think the biggest difference between Wales and Canada will be their sense of humour, I’ve heard it‘s very different to our own” added Chloe.

The trip will also allow the students to visit world famous tourist attractions, including Niagara Falls.

The exchange has run for over a decade and Lorna Thomas, now in Year 13, says the 2011 group will have the time of their lives after she made the trip last year.

“I loved it and found all the people I met in Canada to be really friendly,” she said: “I had a great time with my host family and we did loads of fun activities. I’d definitely recommend the trip to any future students and I hope this year’s group will have as good a time as we all did.”

Megan said the group wanted to say a “special thank you” to the Rotary Club for organising the exchange and providing a “special opportunity” which will be completed in March when the Canadians come to Welshpool.

“I can’t wait for them to come,” said Sionned. “I’m already thinking of activities we could do and places we could visit when they are here.”
