Revealed: Best football prank ever?

18/10/2011 @ 04:57

Footballers are not generally renowned for their intellect but mywelshpool can reveal one of the best wind-ups the local game has ever seen!

Llansantffraid Village manager, Jamie Davies, realising his team needed a lift after a string of tough games, reminded his players to “bring your passports on Saturday” after Tuesday night training ahead of a Welsh Cup match on Anglesey against Gwalchmai earlier this season.

Thinking the lads would realise the joke, Davies was flabbergasted to find out that one of his more intelligent players had fallen for it hook, line and sinker.

“I just said it as a joke in passing at the end of training and never thought anyone would take it serious,” said Davies. “But it started when I got a call from one player’s mum on the Friday night who was checking to see if it was a wind-up so I told her it was. But then on the Saturday one of the other lads – Jack Jones - came to me as we got on the bus to say he didn’t have his passport with him.”

The joke was on and poor Jones’s teammates played their part superbly.

Deciding it was too late to retrieve the passport from home, Davies told the worried player that he would have to be ‘smuggled’ into Anglesey in the bus’s luggage compartment. Still not realising the wind-up, Jones climbed in and hid behind the kit bags when the bus stopped at Bangor before going through Anglesey ‘customs’.

“We pulled over and let him out the other side but rather than reveal all, we decided to keep it going for the way home too,” Davies continued.

So, the player once again climbed into the luggage compartment to be ‘smuggled’ back off the island on their return.

“It was only by Wrexham that we told him!” said Davies.

Unfortunately the prank didn’t help the team on the pitch as they crashed out of the Welsh Cup 3-2.
