20/05/2013 @ 12:09

An event in Llanfair Caereinion for the Powys Eisteddfod 2013 was a huge success, raising £1000.

The sold-out evening was themed upon the remarkable life story of David Davies from Llandinam with Dr. David Jenkins, Director of The National Waterfront Museum Swansea and originally from Llanfyllin, the guest speaker.

Recognised as a world leading expert on the life of David Davies, he presented to a full Institute, and amongst the crowd was Mrs Davies, wife of the late Islwyn Davies, David Davies’ grandson.

David Davies’ contribution to Montgomeryshire included the building of the Institute in Llanfair Caereinion and giving generously towards the cost of Moreia Chapel and numerous other projects across the county like Neuadd Bridge and Broneirion Hall. He established a rail network in Wales including the Llanidloes to Newtown line and further afield he was behind the construction of Barry Docks.

Margaret and Gwendoline Davies, David Davies' grand-daughters, also made their mark through establishing the Gregynog Festival which is celebrating its 80th Anniversary this year and continues the tradition of its founders to bring together some of the finest artists in the world to perform. The Festival takes place at Gregynog Hall between June 20-30. To view the programme visit www.gregynogfestival.org .

Glandon Lewis, Chairman of the Powys Eisteddfod 2013 committee said: “It was a fantastic evening which succeeded to bring people from across Montgomeryshire together to hear about the remarkable life of David Davies.

The Eisteddfod will be held in Llanfair Ceareinion on July 19-20.
