Watering town's flowers costs us thousands

Welshpool’s bill for watering the town’s hanging baskets runs into thousands of pounds, we can reveal.

Welshpool Town Council, keen to save tax payer money, are rethinking their town beautification programme by replacing the current flower and plant displays, particularly around the Town Hall, with high-quality synthetic displays.

They currently cough up just under £1,000 on flowers and plants annually, but it can take a member of staff up to 90 minutes to water them all, clocking up more than £2,500-worth of staff time every year.

“The council is considering replacing them with high quality synthetic and weather-proof displays which can continue from the Town Hall and down the Main Street and Puzzle Square,” said Town Clerk, Robert Robinson. “It will be quite a saving and a better use of staff time and council money.”

The issue will be discussed at an upcoming Town Council meeting.
