Fighting for a cleaner Welshpool

Youngsters are often criticised these days for one reason or another, but a group from Welshpool has given us all reason to cheerful by carrying out some much needed community work this weekend.

Youngsters from the ‘LilRigs’ boxing training group trained by Warren ‘Big Rig’ Sinden, joined members from Welshpool Amateur Boxing Club for a litter pick that uncovered some astonishing finds.

During the course of two hours, the youngsters pulled traffic cones, glasses, nappies, bottles, a bag of fire kindle and even a shopping trolley from the canal!

“All of these youngsters were out volunteering their time to help give back to the community,” said Warren. “They all had a great laugh despite the cold weather. Despite the range in ages they showed great teamwork skills to pull together and get a good job done.

“The recovered trolley from the canal was returned to Tesco who were so grateful that they rewarded the kids with some chocolate.

“We did two hours and the amount we collected was crazy! I really cannot stress enough the importance of putting your litter in the bin. Overall we filled three bin liners along with several other half-filled ones.”

Their work didn’t go unnoticed. It has been roundly praised on social media and one passer-by was so impressed to see the youngsters at work, they donated £25 to the boxing club on the spot.

“This is just a start for the club as we start planning more future ways of helping our local community,” Warren, who runs the town's Rigorous Gym, added.

“Thank-you to all the parents and kids who gave up their free time. A massive thank you to Di Davies for coming along and helping with the kids too. What a fun day, and something so different and needed. I am proud of them all.”
