Self-isolating tourists told to pack their bags

29/03/2020 @ 12:39

The Welsh Government has intervened to stop the flow of self-isolating tourists into the area by closing down all accommodation providers until further notice.

There was growing concern that self-isolating tourists were escaping Coronavirus hotspots by travelling to our countryside to see out the pandemic.

Police continued to stop motorists entering the Welshpool area overnight without good reason to be here, and now local hotel, guesthouse and bed and breakfast owners are being encouraged to make their facilities available to key workers instead.

MidWales Tourism (MWTCymru) confirmed: “The Welsh Government’s new regulations now state that all accommodation providers should close and are to remain in force until further notice.

“Businesses wanting to offer accommodation to key workers must get permission from their Local Authority to do so.

“The two contacts at Powys County Council are julie.a.lewis@powys.gov.uk and Greg.thomas2@powys.gov.uk.”

The tourism economy, worth £17 million a day to Wales, has been decimated by the ongoing crisis.

The full accommodation guidelines are here.
