They were queueing up to spend a pound in Welshpool on Saturday Morning as the doors to the town's new Poundland store were opened.

And Deputy Mayor Councillor Steve Kaye was on hand to officially open the store and welcome Poundland to Welshpool, saying he was delighted the company had chosen to move to Welshpool.

The store opened in the former Co-operative building in Berriew Street, which has been empty since November 2012 with Poundland celebrating 25 successful years in business by opening another new store.

The Co-operative closed just two years after taking over from Somerfield. Prior to that the building was occupied by Gateway Supermarkets on the site of the former White Lion Hotel.

“It’s a very special year for Poundland,” said a spokesman. “Not only are we celebrating 25 years of offering customers amazing value every day, but now are also proud winners of the 2015 Grocer award for own label range of the year for Make Up Gallery.

“Welshpool shoppers will find there’s 1000’s of great products right across the store so whether you’re looking for everyday essentials, sweet treats or beauty and skin care for the whole family there’s something for everyone.
