MBE for Leighton Redwoods man

31/12/2010 @ 10:17

The man responsible for the management of the famous Redwood forestry at Leighton has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Years Honours.

David John Williams of Ffestiniog, Gwynedd, has been honoured for his services to forestry and agriculture, having voluntarily managed a unique forest of redwoods near Welshpool.

The Leighton Redwood Grove is one of the few places outside California where the great trees thrive."They're very fussy about the conditions they grow in and aren't planted anywhere else in the USA," explained the long retired Forestry Commission officer.

"Ours are tiny compared to those in California because they're only 150 years old. But they're still very impressive."
David was asked to manage the forest as a short-term favour, but 31 years later he has no intention of stepping aside.
