Welshpool High School has suffered ‘serious’ damage following flooding over the New Year period, but the school is determined to be open for the new term on Wednesday.
Contractors have been on site since the damage was discovered on Friday and cleaned up in the canteen and two gymnasiums which were worst affected.
But there is added concern because of flooding to the asbestos roof of the canteen and a decision is expected to be made late Monday/early Tuesday as to whether it can be opened for the new term.
“There has been serious flooding,” said Mr. Graham Lewis, Chair of the School Governors. “The caretaker was sick over the Christmas period so the damage was only discovered on New Year’s Eve. It could have been a problem for several days before that.
“I have met with the headmaster who is determined to have the school open on time, especially since we missed the last three days of term due to the weather. But it will be a health and safety decision in the end and will only open if it is safe to do so.”
Teachers return to school for a training day on Tuesday while pupils are due back on Wednesday. Parents are advised to check the Powys County Council web site
