Low flying resumes today

04/01/2011 @ 11:41

The skies above Welshpool will become a tactical training area today as the Royal Air Force launches its New Year low flying exercises.

Fast jets and Hercules transport aircraft will be used in exercises during 20 days in January with no activity planned for the weekends.

Operational low flying by fixed wing aircraft between 250ft and 100ft is a more representative altitude at which pilots would actually fly in a combat scenario.

The final decision to fly is taken on the day itself and is dependent on good visibility. It is likely that some of the slots will not be used, but no additional times will be added to those already booked.
