Tests carried out on air samples from Welshpool High School this afternoon have shown no signs of asbestos contamination, mywelshpool can reveal.
The news means that the clean up at the school following substantial flood damage over the weekend can continue, but officials have warned that it could be several days before all pupils are able to return.
“The school will only be open tomorrow (Wednesday) to the teaching staff and pupils from the sixth form,” said Graham Lewis, Chair of the School Governors. “It is good news that the tests have come back negative and the school is doing its best to get the kids back in as soon as is possible, but it will only be done with the blessing from the health and safety specialists.”
The school canteen and kitchen pose the biggest problem due to extensive damage to the brown asbestos ceiling. The area has been sealed off and is awaiting a specialist team of contractors to clear the mess.
“We are going to take it day by day at the moment because the health and welfare of the staff and pupils is the school’s utmost priority,” added Mr. Lewis. “No risks will be taken.”
Sixth formers and staff are advised to bring in their own packed lunches tomorrow due to the canteen and kitchen being closed.
The next priority is to try and get some Year 11 students in for a scheduled exam on Thursday.
