Mid Wales rally driver Mark Higgins has smashed the four-wheeled Isle of Man TT course record and has plans to go even faster on Friday.

Higgins, from the Forest Experience Rally School at Carno, smashed his own course record twice in the space of three days and on Friday aims to take his Subaru WRX STi even quicker around the island roads.

On Saturday, two days before two riders would lose their lives on the same Snaefell Mountain course, Higgins set a new course record of 17.49minutes, beating his previous record-setting run of 19.15minutes. And on Monday he topped even that at 17.35minutes – an average of 128.72mph.

A couple of months ago Subaru unveiled the specialised machine that – together with Prodrive – they hoped would break the four-wheeled Isle of Man TT record that Mark Higgins set back in 2014And that’s exactly what it did.

“I think 125mph was the dream before the start,” said Higgins, who broke the record after completing just one practice run. “There’s a little bit more to come – definitely from me because I’m learning all the time I go around the track – and there is a little bit more to come from the car as well.”

Higgins was born and raised  on the island before moving with his family to set up the Forest Experience Rally School.
