The crowning moment of a packed weekend of competition at Welshpool Golf Club was almost certainly David (Max) Owen's hole-in-one at the eighth on Sunday in the R V Buckley Cup.

The tournament was won by Bobby Aldridge (8) with an excellent score of 41 points; Robert Williams (23) came second on the count-back with 39 and he just beat Philip Constable (16), the club vice-captain, into third.

That said, on Saturday John Wood, the club's president, had organised an outstanding President's Day competition which was enjoyed by a record 91 players. With the sun shining, juniors, ladies and gentlemen combined to produce the strongest field seen this year.

Sue Shemilt (24), the Ladies' Captain, won the ladies' prize with 37 points. Carwyn Jones (15) won the men’s with 45 points; Steve Pritchard (18) was second with 43 points and Alun Evans (15) was third with 42 points. Max Williams (24) won the Juniors' prize, the Seniors’ prize was won by Joe Jones (22) with 42 points, and the Visitors' prize was won by the President's Son, Leigh Wood, with 39 points.

On Tuesday the seniors' Jim Seddon Cup was won by the club chairman, John Wood (23), with a net round of 67. Steve Morris (16) was second with a net 70 just beating Graham Hughes (16) on count-back into third. The local derby encounter against Lakeside on Thursday was won by the home team, Welshpool, by 2 and a half to 1 and a half.

On Sunday last Clive Jones (21) and Rob Williams (23) came in third in the Mid Wales Golf Association meeting at Cradoc, where a total of 54 players from Welshpool attended.
