Local fans of the national football team are frantically trying to book travel today to return to Paris for this weekend’s historic last 16 Euros showdown.

Scores of fans from towns and villages across Montgomeryshire have played their part in supporting Wales as they cruised to top of Group B with a third game mauling of Russia.

But after nearly two weeks on the road, most returned home yesterday to find most conventional routes back to Paris for Saturday have already been booked up.

MyWelshpool co-founder David Williams is one of them.

“Forget trying to find a flight from any airport as they all went within minutes of the final whistle,” he said. “Eurostar is also mostly booked up or what’s available is now sky high in price.”

So it looks like another long road trip for those fans who have already spent the best part of a fortnight travelling the length and breadth of France.

Bryan Jarman from Abermule said: “Everything was booked up so quickly so we’ll be driving down via a night in Folkestone. There’s no way we are going to miss it after all these years of waiting!”

Fans groups are also frantically trying to book coaches from north and south Wales but are facing difficulty meeting demand with up to 30,000 Welsh fans expected to make the trip.

Wales beat Slovakia and Russia in the group stage but lost to an injury time goal against England. They topped the group and are expected to play either Northern Ireland or Turkey.
