Fake Brexit voter exposed

27/07/2016 @ 10:30

A local 26-year-old man has been exposed as a fraud for impersonating someone else during the vote on whether Britain should leave the European Union.

Police are keeping the man’s identity close to their chest, and haven’t revealed whether he was an ‘in’ or ‘out’, but he is believed to have cast his ‘vote’ in our area.

Police say he committed an offence of ‘personation’ under election legislation when he pretended to be someone else to cast their vote.

“His deceit was realised by polling station staff who knew the real person and, recognised that he was an imposter,” said a police spokesperson. “The matter was reported to Dyfed-Powys Police for investigation following which the man received a caution.”

DC Robert Seymour of Dyfed-Powys Police Fraud Team added: “Members of the public must be aware that it is illegal to vote by pretending to be someone else, even if they’ve been asked to do it as a favour by the person they are pretending to be. Voters can always vote by proxy which is different to the actions taken by the male on this occasion.”
