The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway aims to welcome even more visitors this summer with a new timetable and extra attractions.

The line has launched a new August timetable that includes on Tuesday to Thursday a diesel-hauled train departing from Welshpool at 9.45am, 1.5 hours earlier than previously.

“Passengers on this train can return on the steam-hauled service from Llanfair arriving back at Welshpool at 12.05pm, which leaves them time to visit another local attraction in the afternoon such as Powis Castle,” said general manager Charles Spencer.

Alternatively visitors can visit another attraction in the morning and take an afternoon steam service to Llanfair, returning by the new late diesel service that reaches Welshpool at 5.45pm.

There is a lot going on at the Llanfair Line this summer, including two of the popular Vintage Weekends on 30th-31st July and 13th14th August.

These now feature mixed trains, freight vehicles being marshalled with the passenger carriages enabling visitors to watch the complex shunting required at either end of the journey.

Over the weekend of 7th-8th August ham radio enthusiasts will be broadcasting to the world from the platform at Welshpool Raven Square station, while throughout August the railway will be gearing up for its big event of the year, the Steam Gala on 2nd-4th September.

Top attraction at this year’s Gala will be visiting locomotive ‘Chevallier’, alongside many other highlights – details are on the railway’s website, which also includes the full timetable and online advanced ticket booking to beat queues at the booking office.

Alternatively visitors can phone 01938 810441 for more details, and keep up to date with the latest news on the railway’s Facebook page at
