Powys County Council has reacted to our story about a rat problem in Berriew Street Car Park by pledging to take action.

Yesterday we reported how rats were spotted scurrying around the recycling bins in the car park throughout the day (pictured) and in full view of visiting motorists.

I n response last night, Powys said it will liaise with the town council to tackle the problem.

Cllr John Powell, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, told us: “The council is aware of this issue of rats at Berriew Street Car Park. We have contacted Welshpool Town Council about the possibility of removing the banks as there are alternative provisions nearby and it would reduce waste dumped at this location as unfortunately these recycling centres do attract flytipping.

“We will continue to liaise with the town council on this matter.”

Town Clerk Robert Robinson said he too had seen rats running around, and also blamed misuse of the recycling bins by careless dumping.
