Roberts wins cup but Pool beaten

Mark Roberts enjoyed his best round of the year to win the Mainwaring Bowl at Welshpool Golf Club on Saturday, scoring an excellent 62 and seeing his handicap reduced by three shots to 15.

Simon Roberts scored a fine 63 to come in second and also lost a shot, his handicap now standing at 11. Chris Roberts (18) came in third with a 64.

Welshpool men suffered a narrow 3&2 defeat in the latest round of the Welsh Team Championships – beaten by Bull Bay at Wrexham Golf Club, despite wins for Mark Fletcher and Mark Templeton.

On Sunday, the A P Squibb Cup was played in fine summer weather.  Carwyn Jones (12) clearly enjoyed the change of format to stableford scoring strongly to win with 42 points.  Dai Ellis (17) was second on count-back with 39 and in third was Robert Williams (21) also with 39.

The C E Parry mixed foursomes was also played on Sunday.  Congratulations to Bob and Linda Aldridge who won with 70.5.  Ray and Margaret Bowen were 2nd with 73.5 and in 3rd place were Derrick Arthur and Sue Jones with 76.

The Seniors' August Medal was played on Tuesday and was won by Derrick Arthur (25) with an excellent nett score of 67.  Steve Morris (16) was second with 69 just beating into third place Ray Bowen (21) on count-back.

Every nook and cranny of The Golfa course was explored in a Cross Country featuring an 800 yard par 8. The nine extended holes were keenly contested and the winner was Harold Norris (23) with just 14 points.  Maggie Cadwallader (28) was second with 10 points, just beating Sammy Marck (15) into third on count-back.
