Library service in UK top three

A council service that provides free access to an online research service has hit the top three for use in the UK, Powys County Council has announced.

The council’s Library Service offers the popular research service ‘Access to Research’ at all its branch libraries.  The service gives students and researchers free access to over 15 million academic articles from their local library.

The library service has been part of the Access to Research service since it was launched.

Latest figures released by the Publishers Licensing Society showed the library service was the third highest performing service during July for people using Access to Research, ahead of Aberdeen City, Worcestershire and Kensington and Chelsea.

Its jump to third place was also an improvement for the library service, which was placed fifth back in May.

Cllr Graham Brown, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Library Services, said: “Living in a rural area like Welshpool does not mean that this has to be a barrier to learning when we have such a wide range of resources through our libraries.

“It’s heartening to see that this message is out there. Libraries are at the forefront of this development and are opening up these opportunities to users.”
