Welshpool Town Council is close to taking over street cleaning services from Powys County Council.

The council will meet on Wednesday, expecting to hear that the drafted agreement between the two authorities has been completed in time for an October 1 handover.

In a report to the council Town Clerk Robert Robinson says: “The planning to enable a smooth takeover of the service is going well. A chart showing each area of the town has been completed to that a working schedule can be competed. It will take three months to get the areas all looking pristine.”

The Town Council will be advertising for additional staff to carry out the duties which include street cleaning, grass cutting and bin emptying.

The council will also consider a request for support from Powys County Council to remove the recycling bins from Berriew Street Car Park as part of the county authority’s cost saving exercise.
