What’s happening at rat infested car park?

More than a month after rats were first spotted running amok around the bins at Berriew Street Car Park, nothing appears to have been done.

But MyWelshpool understands that by the end of this month the bins will be gone and hopefully the problem too.

Readers sent us pictures last month (pictured) of rats scurrying around the bins in broad daylight and Town Clerk Robert Robinson even admitted that he had spotted one climbing onto a visiting car and not reappearing.

He demanded urgent action from the County Council who seem to have reacted with word reaching us that the problem should be resolved soon.

“The Town Council was asked by the County Council if they would support moving the bins from the Berriew Street Car Park,” said Mr Robinson. “The Full Council supported the idea and I understand that they are being removed at the end of September.”

That can’t come soon enough for the many car park users and local businesses who believe the problem is putting off visitors.

Both town and county councils have said that irresponsible leaving of waste next to the bins is to blame, but users will say that the new three-weekly only collections means leaves them with no option and the bins are often full.

The County Council has been asked for confirmation of the decision to move the bins and we’ll let you know as soon as we receive.
