Licensed bars are to be allowed at Sunday functions in Welshpool Town Hall after the Town Council changed its policy on Wednesday night.

Previously the council had turned down requests to stage Sunday christenings, parties and sportsman’s dinners in the Town Hall but this week’s policy change means functions will be allowed with bars until 9pm.

Councillor Graham Breeze, chairman of the Council Services Committee, said a long discussion had taken place before recommending the changes to Wednesday night’s full council meeting.

“Previously the policy did not permit the bar to be open on Sundays but we have to move with the times,” said Councillor Breeze.

“We are trying to market the Town Hall as an event venue and today’s customers demand licensed facilities. Turning away requests for Sunday functions is not good business so the committee considered several options before making the proposal.

“We will review the situation after 12 months.”
