Council accuses party of "insensitive electioneering"

Political literature distributed in Welshpool in the week leading up to the death of Councillor Ann Holloway has been condemned by Welshpool Town Council and described as “insensitive electioneering.”

Councillors are also angry that “news snippets” about Town Council activities contained in the leaflet could mislead residents into believing they were linked to the political party.

The council voted unanimously to announce its concerns at the political link with Councillor Philip Pritchard saying he was “completely disgusted.”

“This is nothing more than blatant and insensitive electioneering by a political party, distributed in the week ahead of Councillor Ann Holloway’s death. Those involved should be ashamed of their actions and at their attempts to mislead Welshpool residents into believing Town Council achievements were their own.

“I have been extremely upset by this literature and the timing of its distribution was deplorable.”

Councillor Steve Kaye, the Mayor of Welshpool, said: “If an activity has been completed by the Town Council it is only polite to recognise our involvement and not give the impression that the writers have achieved it when they have actually had nothing to do with it.”

The council did not reveal the identity of the political party involved but MyWelshpool has learned that the issue revolves around a copy of “Welshpool Focus”, published and distributed by the Montgomeryshire Liberal Democrats.

Mr Richard Church, whose name appears as the contact on the issue of Focus was contacted for a response by email but did not respond.
