Welshpool turned out in hundreds to pay last respects to the town's "first lady" Councillor Ann Holloway yesterday (Saturday).

St Mary’s Church was packed as family, friends and former colleagues and pupils at Welshpool High School joined with Welshpool Town Council and Powys County Councillors for the ceremony conducted by the Rev Steve Wilson.

Tributes to the former Welshpool Mayor and Chairman of Powys County Councillor were paid by Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies, County and Town Councillor Phil Prirtchard and Welshpool Mayor Steve Kaye.

Readings were given by former Welshpool vicars William Rowell and Roger Brown with a requested Welsh musical tribute from Geraint Peate. The bearers were Town Councillors Graham Breeze and Malcolm Douglass and County Councillors Aled Davies and Peter Lewis. Welshpool Fire Station Officer Brendan McWhinnie and a team of firefighters acted as ushers.

A funeral procession led mourners down Brook Street from Miss Holloway's home at Lledan Terrace ahead of a service remembering her life. And following the service traffic came to a standstill as mourners followed the coffin through the town to Christ Church where Miss Holloway was buried alongside her parents.

A book of remembrance was signed by many who attended the afternoon tea and will be available at  the Tourist Information Office for two weeks following the service..

Miss Holloway died on Monday, September 19 in the Rhallt Nursing Home after a short illness.
