Rail group calls for extra trains

The introduction of the increased services on the local railway has certainly made a positive impact, but one group is calling on the Welsh Government to take it to the next level.

The Shrewsbury-Aberystwyth line is running almost hourly for most of the week since last year with more trains on at a weekend too.

But now The Shrewsbury-Aberystwyth Rail Liaison Committee says more should be done, including an hourly service seven days a week.

“For some time now the Committee has worked to gain more frequent rail services and in May 2015 this came to fruition,” said a spokesperson for the Group.

“There are also other improvements to the line in which the Committee has been involved. Now work starts to try and gain the extra trains needed to provide a full hourly service seven days a week. To achieve this the Committee will work with both Welsh Government and the Rail Companies involved during the Franchise Process.”

The spokesperson also confirmed that there is no danger that the current line will end its journey in Shrewsbury, which will bring relief to Montgomeryshire passengers knowing they can stay on the same train all the way to Birmingham.

The Committee includes County, Town and Community Councils, MPs and AMs, Rail Companies, Rail Interest Organisations, Cambrian Rail Partnership and others.
