lWelshpool Town Council held a ceremony outside the Town Hall to announce that it is taken on the street cleaning services from Powys County.

The state of the town’s streets has come under scrutiny of late with overgrown grass, littering and bulging litter bins a cause for concern.

The situation has deteriorated due to Powys cutting back its services, so the town council has stepped in and taken on street cleaning, grass cutting, bin emptying and general maintenance of the town.

Town Mayor Councillor Steve Kaye handed over a ceremonial broom to Councillor Graham Breeze, chairman of the Council Services & Property Committee on Friday, watched by the new Street Scene staff, councillors and members of the public.

Councillor Kaye praised Town Clerk Robert Robinson for negotiating the smooth handover from Powys and said the Town Council would do its best to ensure the town was in a clean and tidy condition.

Councillor Breeze said the team had already got off to a good start by clearing the Brook Street entrance to St Mary’s Church and would be targeting areas of the town while carrying out daily street sweeping and bin emptying.
