Welshpool’s James Watkins will be competing in the Wyedean Stages in the Forest of Dean on Saturday hoping for a change of luck.

Watkins competed successfully in the Welsh National Forest Championships in a Nissan Micra for the last four years and with a move up to a Subaru Impreza – again run by Machynlleth team Geoff Jones Motorsport – was hoping for big things this year.

But mechanical problems meant two non-finishes in the Rally North Wales and The Plains Rally, ruling out any hopes of a title win this season.

“I am really excited about this weekend and the prospect of competing in the Subaru,” said Watkins. “My previous rally finished n stage three when we were lying fourth in class so I am hoping for a better run this weekend.

“The Subaru was a revelation to drive compared to the little Micra. It’s got a lot more power and just rode the tracks so well and with four wheel drive picks its feet up very quickly.

“This year has not been very kind to us so all my energies are concentrated on 2017 when we intend to compete in the Welsh Championships again with selected rounds of the British Championships.”

Chepstow’s Richard Suter will be in the passenger’s seat again this weekend.
