Welshpool resident Ruth Canning has been selected as the Welsh Conservative Candidate for the Llanerchyddol Council by-election on December 15.

Ruth is Chairman of Dorothy Hughes House in Welshpool and has been involved in education and as a Counsellor for the Citizens Advice Bureau for many years.

She also helps her husband Martin with his family business and strongly supports small shops and businesses in Welshpool.

“My family has played an integral part in Welshpool life since the 1930s. I am proud to carry on the work of my late father, John Platt, who helped found Dorothy Hughes House, the home for senior citizens in Westwood Road, of which I am now Chairman.

“My uncle and aunt, Glyn and Betty Jenkin-Jones, ran Aber Carriers, a well-known haulage firm and large employer based in Welshpool, which is fondly remembered by many today.

“With my background in education, I am fighting for more nursery provision in Welshpool. With the planned closure of four schools and the opening of two new schools, we need to make sure that nursery provision is properly provided for young families with working parents in Welshpool.”

Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies MP said: “I have known Ruth for many years – she really cares about her local community and will campaign on local issues such as supporting shops and small businesses in Welshpool, saving Potters’ recycling centre, more nursery provision and the best care possible for our senior citizens. I am looking forward to helping Ruth become the County Councillor for the Llanerchyddol ward so that we get a better deal for the people of Welshpool from Powys County Council.”

Independent candidate Graham Breeze and Liberal Democrat Richard Church have also announced they will run for the vacant seat.
