After being dogged by mechanical failure in his new Subaru Imprezza this season Welshpool rally driver James Watkins enjoyed a good finish in the Wyedean Stages in the Forest of Dean on Saturday.

Watkins and co-driver Richard Suter were blessed with better luck when finishing 24th in a field of 122 starters and fifth in a very competitive class. In the Rally Marketing Subaru run by Machynlleth’s Geoff Jones Motorsport.

Pre-event rain made the stages treacherous with many competitors failing to finish.

“All I wanted to do on this event was to get a finish after the disappointing year, so finishing 24th overall and fifth in class was a real bonus,” said Watkins at the end of the Pirelli Welsh National Forest Championship event.

“The car was good and although we had a few moments we came through in the end.

“I have to thank Richard Suter on the maps and the team at Geoff Jones Motorsport for looking after the car and the many local sponsors for their continued support.”

Watkins’ next event will be the Mid Wales Stages in March, 2017.
