A Welshpool Broad Street shop has had to close its food department after rats were seen on the premises.

Officers from Powys County Council food safety team carried out a check at 1st Stop yesterday (Wednesday) following complaints from a customer and ordered the food section of the store to be closed.

Councillor John Powell, Cabinet Member for Environmental Health, said: “We received a complaint from a member of the public regarding 1st Stop on Broad Street, Welshpool.

“Staff from our food safety team carried out an inspection of the premises and during the inspection found evidence of rat activity.  This was brought immediately to the attention of the business operator.

“A hygiene emergency prohibition notice has been served on the premises, which will remain in place while our food safety team works closely with the business operator to resolve this matter.”

No-one from the store was available to comment but the shop remains partially open for Post Office users, newspaper and magazine sales and other electronic sales such as the Lottery.
