New Mace Bearer for town

Welshpool has a new Mace Bearer, a ceremonial role that has been undertaken for some time by John Astley.

Mr Astley’s decision to step aside means that Cllr Heather Chave will assume the role initially for the next 12 months.

The Town Clerk Robert Robinson said: “John will be involved in training as he did such a great job. He will be a difficult act to follow but we are sure that Heather is up for that. We look forward to Heather coming into the Office for her fitting of the regalia.”

The Mace Bearer attends certain civic functions including this Friday’s Christmas Lights, when the Mayor is fully dressed up. The mace bearer is there to ceremonially protect the Mayor.
