The £2m “shambles”

Health service proposals that would have benefited Mid Wales patients have been refused by Shropshire health chiefs, prompting the Montgomeryshire MP to call the situation a “shambles”.

The Future Fit Board was set up by the Shropshire Commissioning Group and the Telford and Wrekin Commissioning Group to recommend future steps for providing health care at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals.

After three years and £2million, the Future Fit Board recommended service upgrades in Shrewsbury which would have resulted in many Montgomeryshire patients avoiding longer trips to Telford for treatment.

But last night the two Community Groups refused to accept the recommendation, and asked the Future Fit Board to do more work.

It hasn’t gone down well at all, with Mr Davies saying: “Frustration, disappointment, disbelief, despair - choose your own word. Don't think I've seen such a shambles and failure of leadership in my life.”

In an online blog hastily drafted after the meeting, Mr. Davies called it a “Black Day for NHS Reform”.

He added that “we'll have to let the dust settle and regroup” but there will be some anxious times ahead as we wait to see what will be available for us across the border.
