Powys County Council has rubber stamped a proposal that will transform the way that early years’ education is delivered in Welshpool.

The four current primary schools in the town will be replaced by two new schools, one of each for English and Welsh streams.

The new English-medium Church in Wales school will be built near Welshpool High School on the Salop Road fields. The new Welsh medium primary school will be created at the current Ysgol Maesydre site.

The report to Powys cabinet recommended Ardwyn, Grungrog, Oldford and Ysgol Maesydre (picture) nursery and infants schools close.

The two new schools are expected to be fully operational by the start of the 2018-19 school year, with the current school sites being utilised for the time being.
