British Legion confirms ongoing investigation at Welshpool

A year-long investigation into historical fundraising issues at the Welshpool Branch of The Royal British Legion is continuing.

Alex Kent at the London headquarters of the RBL today confirmed that the investigation was continuing, reiterating the October statement that: “The investigation is still ongoing, therefore we are unable to comment.”

In February 2016 a spokesman said: “I can confirm that we are holding an internal investigation into a fundraising issue at the Welshpool Branch. No further comment will be made at this time.”

The 2015 Poppy Appeal in Welshpool smashed all previous records but new officials including a Poppy Collection Organiser were appointed at a twice-convened annual meeting which on the second occasion was supervised by officers from the Wales Cardiff headquarters.

Since then the head office insisted the Poppy Appeal be dealt with separately and reappointed Mrs Jan Williams as the Collection Organiser.

The 2016 Poppy Appeal was another record breaker with over £20,000 raised for the RBL.
