Shropshire and Mid Wales rail user Group SARPA are advising passengers travelling from Caersws, Newtown and Welshpool to Telford to split their tickets to save money.

The group has exposed that buying a return to Shrewsbury and then a separate return from Shrewsbury to Telford will save people up to a third of the cost of the through fare.

Explaining the difference, SAPRA said that an Off-Peak Day Return from Newtown to Telford is £21.40 however if passengers buy an Anytime Day Return from Newtown to Shrewsbury for £8.40 and an Off-Peak Day Return from Shrewsbury to Telford for £6.00 they will only pay £14.40 in total, saving £7.00.

An Anytime Day Return from Newtown to Telford is £17.50 however if passengers buy an Anytime Day Return from Welshpool to Shrewsbury for £6.30 and an Anytime Day Return from Shrewsbury to Telford for £7.30 they will only pay £13.60 in total, saving £3.90.

SARPA Spokesman Albert Hall commented: “We’ve been contacted by people complaining about the prices to Telford and even heard of people who have driven having seen prices online, however there’s no need for anyone to pay the full fare as the simple expedient of split ticketing will save money.

“Websites like Trainline don’t tell you this, passengers deserve a fair and transparent fares system where the cheapest prices are not hidden.”
