Welshpool is facing more traffic chaos following an announcement that a section of Mill Lane will be closed in February for essential work to be carried out.

Members of Welshpool Town Council heard on Wednesday night that Powys County Council was seeking an order to close a section of the road to install a water main for the new supermarkets currently being built.

The road will close between Tesco roundabout and Clerks’ Bridge to allow the work to go ahead in a period between February 20 and March 1st.

Town Councillors expressed concerns about the impact closure would have on town centre traffic at peak times of the day with Town Clerk Robert Robinson asked to contact Powys Council about monitoring The Cross traffic light system during the period.

Councillor Graham Breeze said he was also concerned that the closure might coincide with emergency repairs set to be carried out on Buttington Railway Crossing.

“It would be a nightmare for Welshpool town centre should the two closures coincide and we must ensure Powys County Council takes this into consideration.”
