Welshpool will be going to the polls in May to vote on who will form the next Town Council, so now is your chance to step forward for election.

Nominations are now being taken and providing you meet the following criteria, you can stand to become a town councillor:

1.     You must be a British or EU citizen and at least 18 years of age.

2.     You must have occupied and owned or leased property in the ward you wish to stand for the whole of the last 12 months.

3.     You must have worked within the ward in which you wish to stand for at least the whole the last 12 months.

4.     You must have occupied and owned or leased property within three miles as the crow flies from your home and the nearest boundary of the ward to which you wish to be elected.

“Your local council is very active and you may wish to be involved as everyone has something to offer,” said Town Clerk, Robert Robinson.

The Town Council is responsible for the Town Hall, Markets, Day Centre, Tourist Information Centre, Public Toilets, street cleaning & litter bins, Maes y Dre recreation grounds, Playgrounds, Country Park, CCTV, Motte & Bailey Castle, Meals on Wheels, Open Spaces, War Memorial & Memorial Gardens, Skateboard Park, The Armoury Complex, Town Signs & Maps, Tourism booklets, Web Site, Air Show, Transport Festival, Carnival, Christmas Lights, Winter Festival, Canal and Food Festival, Council Offices and the station car parks.

“In addition, there are statutory duties such as planning consultations. As you can see there is a lot to do,” said Mr. Robinson.

Information packs are available from the Tourist Information Centre, or online at www.welshpooltowncouncil.gov.uk.

To gain a nomination pack you should contact Powys County Council (Election Dept) on 01597 826000. You need to have submitted your papers by 4pm on April 4.
