Welshpool’s Adele Nicoll has won a superb bronze medal in the European U23 Throwing Cup in Gran Canaria today (Saturday).

It’s been a strong start to the shot put season for Adele who has overcome a winter of injury by picking up from where she left off at the end of last season.

But today marked one of her greatest moments yet, finishing third among the best on the continent for her age range and only being denied a silver medal in the last round.

“I am absolutely over the moon to win my first European medal with a season’s best throw of 16.21m and being beaten to the silver medal in the last round,” she said. “I can't wait to put some hard work in now before my next competition in a month’s time.

“Everything is going in the right direction and I cannot thank everybody enough for the support I have received, not only just for this competition but every day.”

The event was won by Sweden’s Fanny Roos with a whopping 17.53m throw while Alena Pasechnik of Belarus pipped Adele, who was representing Great Britan and Northern Ireland, to second with 16.33m.

PICTURE: That's my girl! Adele is congratulated by her mum Justine who made the trip out to Gran Canaria to watch.
